The next Active Retirement Association General Meeting, free and open to the public, will feature pre-eminent futurist Dr. Dennis L. Meadows, discussing "Limits to Growth: The Last Four Decades and the Next Four." The ARA offers programs reflecting the many interests of people 50+ years old in the ME-NH-MA Seacoast area, retired or not. Please join us at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 9, 2015, 1:30 pm, Durham Evangelical Church, 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH, to take in this important presentation, meet new friends, enjoy delicious refreshments, and learn more about the ARA and its upcoming activities. Dr. Meadows is Professor Emeritus of Systems Management at UNH and President of the Laboratory for Interactive Learning. He first made headlines as the leader of a research team at MIT commissioned by the Club of Rome to use computer simulation to analyze the potential effects of post-World-War-II geometric growth. Their ground-breaking 1972 report, The Limits to Growth, demonstrated the conflict between Earth?s physical capacity and modern human development, and has been highly influential in awakening and inspiring world efforts towards a sustainable society. Dr. Meadows? recent honors include the 2007 UNESCO peace award and the 2009 Japan Prize, one of the world?s most prestigious awards in science and technology. The original analysis looked at potential interactions among world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion, and predicted the resultant impact on global sustainability. Dr. Meadows? presentation will review the conclusions of that study, assess them in light of actual trends since 1972, and discuss what might be expected for the future. The ARA has over 300 members from more than 30 communities in New Hampshire and Maine, who support the organization by annual dues. We offer lectures, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, classes, special-interest groups, and much more!
