"LIMITS TO GROWTH" DENNIS MEADOWS DIS...Description
The Seacoast Memorial Lecture Series is proud to present pre-eminent futurist Dennis L. Meadows, discussing "Limits to Growth: The Last Four Decades and the Next Four." This event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome. Please join us on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 1:30 pm, at the Durham Evangelical Church (upper level), 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH, to learn more about Dr. Meadows' long-term research on global sustainability and its implications for the future.
Dr. Meadows is Professor Emeritus of Systems Management at UNH and President of the Laboratory for Interactive Learning. He first made headlines as the leader of a research team at MIT commissioned by the Club of Rome to use computer simulation to analyze the potential effects of post-World-War-II geometric growth. Their ground-breaking 1972 report, The Limits to Growth, demonstrated the conflict between Earth's physical capacity and modern human development, and has been highly influential in awakening and inspiring world efforts towards a sustainable society. Dr. Meadows' recent honors include the 2007 Berlin Peace Clock Award and the 2009 Japan Prize, one of the world's most prestigious awards in science and technology.
The original analysis looked at potential interactions among world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion, and predicted the resultant impact on global sustainability. Dr. Meadows' presentation will review the conclusions of that study, assess them in light of actual trends since 1972, and discuss what might be expected for the future. The Seacoast Memorial Lecture Series is an affiliate of the Active Retirement Association. The ARA is supported by annual dues from its approximately 350 members who represent 35 towns and cities in southern Maine and New Hampshire.
