“JOEL SHERBURNE AND CALEF’S FAMOUS CO...Description
The Active Retirement Association (ARA) offers programs reflecting the many interests of people 50+ years old, retired or not. Please join us to meet new friends, sample delicious refreshments, and learn more about the ARA and its upcoming activities at our General Meeting on Monday, March 19, 2018, 1:30 pm, Durham Evangelical Church (lower level), 114 Dover Road (Route 108), Durham, NH. The program will feature renowned story-teller Rebecca Rule discussing her new book, Sixty Years of Cuttin’ the Cheese: Joel Sherburne and Calef’s Famous Country Store, and its two subjects. The book celebrates both Sherburne, who was hired as a stock boy in 1957 and has served both the store and the community in many capacities since then, and Calef’s, which has been a fixture in Barrington, NH, since 1869. Much of the story comes through Sherburne’s recollections and observations, including what Rule calls “Joelisms,” his personal brand of Yankee humor. Author, humorist, and raconteur Rebecca Rule has been collecting and sharing New England stories for “fohevah.” The New Hampshire native writes fiction, essays, and reviews, with almost a dozen books to her credit. Her honors include the 1992 Outstanding Emerging Writer Award from the New Hampshire Writers and Publishers Project and the1990 Whetstone Award for Fiction. For a number of years, she taught fiction writing and composition at the University of New Hampshire, where she continues to teach in the Summer Studies Program for teachers. She is a familiar face on NH Public Television, where for 10 years she hosted the New Hampshire Author Series and currently hosts “Our Hometown,” in which key local citizens are interviewed to build lively portraits of particular towns. Currently the ARA has approximately 350 members from over 35 communities in New Hampshire and Maine, who support the organization by annual dues. We offer lectures, discussion groups, films, cultural tours, walks/hikes, classes, special-interest groups, and much more!
