Straight-laced Victorians played it. Alice played it with a flamingo in Wonderland. The game is croquet, and the public is invited to a Croquet and Garden Party at the historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House on Sunday, July 10 from 1 to 4 pm.
With an emphasis on fun over competition, players of all ages and ability levels are welcome to participate. Rules will be explained for those unfamiliar with the game, and there will be a special kids’ course for children aged 10 and under. Light refreshments will be served, and guided tours of the Wentworth House will be offered during the event.
The croquet party is being held in celebration of the opening of “Neighborhood Entertainments: New Englanders at Play,” the Wentworth House summer exhibit. Featuring objects such as antique bicycles, a century-old baseball trophy, early sports equipment, and parlor games, the exhibit illustrates the wide range of recreational activities indulged in over the years by New Englanders.Tell a Friend
